Monitoring body composition is an important tool in guiding weight loss treatment. Unlike monitoring weight or body mass index (BMI), composition looks at the distribution of adipose (fat) and lean mass. With any type of weight loss there is some loss of muscle but with proper nutrition and activity one can prevent excessive loss of muscle. Periodic assessment can help tailor dietary, exercise, and pharmacologic interventions to ensure treatment doesn't result in excessive muscle loss. Some types of analysis can also identify areas of muscle weakness which can be targeted in exercise plans and even excessive extracellular fluid which can be associated with some medical conditions. In the future we will take a look at some different methods to measure body composition. We are here to guide you safely along your journey.
